Skin Substitutes

Skin Substitutes

Skin Substitutes are products that are used to help facilitate the closure of wounds. The wounds can be due to peripheral vascular disease, common neuropathy, common diabetes, venous disease or trauma.

The grafts are usually used when a wound has failed to close within a four week period of time. There are some 400 different skin substitutes on the market. The material that is used is not taken from the patient; but is donated tissue from an individual or animal. Placental, amniotic, bovine tissue and foreskin are common skin substitutes.

The purpose of the skin substitutes is to help energize the wound to heal. The Doctors at Marlboro Podiatry Center are wound specialists and perform this procedure in the hospital as well as in our office. We are also the Podiatric Consultants at The Wound Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
